Yes, you have lash mites. Here's the proper care to keep them in check.

Lash mites are normal. Poor lash hygiene isn’t.

The idea of microscopic mites living around your lashes sounds alarming, but Demodex mites are a normal part of human skin. These tiny organisms live in and around hair follicles and oil glands, including the lash line. Their presence alone does not mean something is wrong.

For lash artists, the conversation should be less about fearing mites and more about understanding why consistent lash hygiene matters.

What happens when the lash line isn’t cleansed?

Lash extensions can collect oil, dead skin, makeup and other debris, especially when clients avoid washing their lashes because they’re worried about retention.

Over time, that buildup can create an environment where Demodex populations may increase. Artists might also notice visible buildup around the lash line, flaking or crusting near the roots, or persistent debris between extensions.

These observations are not a diagnosis, but they are a good reason to reinforce proper aftercare.

Clean extensions are part of good retention

Clients sometimes believe keeping their extensions dry will help them last longer. In reality, allowing oil, makeup and buildup to remain around the lashes isn’t doing their retention any favors.

A simple cleansing routine can make a big difference:

Cleanse regularly with a lash-safe shampoo. Gently work the cleanser through the lashes and along the lash line. Rinse thoroughly, pat dry without rubbing, then brush the extensions once completely dry.

Make aftercare part of the appointment

Don’t just tell clients to “keep them clean.” Show them how.

Retailing lash shampoo gives clients the right product to continue their routine at home while giving lash artists another opportunity to educate clients about proper extension care.

Clean lashes should never be optional aftercare. They should be the standard.

Shop Aki Lashes Lash Shampoo and make proper cleansing part of every client’s routine.
