Aftercare That Saves Retention: The Secret to Longer-Lasting Lash Extensions

Every lash artist wants their clients to experience amazing retention. While proper application plays a huge role, what happens after your client leaves the appointment is just as important. The best lash sets can lose retention quickly if proper aftercare isn't followed.

Educating your clients on aftercare is one of the easiest ways to reduce premature shedding, increase client satisfaction, and encourage repeat appointments. Here are the aftercare habits that truly make a difference.

Clean Your Lashes Every Day

One of the biggest misconceptions is that washing lash extensions makes them fall out. In reality, the opposite is true.

Natural oils, makeup, sunscreen, and dirt build up on the lash line every day. When this buildup isn't removed, it can weaken the adhesive bond and lead to poor retention. It can also increase the risk of irritation and blepharitis.

Use a gentle, oil-free lash cleanser and a soft cleansing brush to thoroughly clean the lashes once a day. Rinse with water and gently pat dry before brushing them back into place with a clean spoolie.

Avoid Oil-Based Products

Oil is one of the fastest ways to break down lash adhesive. Encourage clients to avoid oil-based makeup removers, cleansers, eye creams, and waterproof makeup around the eye area.

Instead, choose products specifically formulated to be extension-safe. This helps preserve the adhesive bond while keeping the natural lashes healthy.

Keep Hands Off

Touching, rubbing, or pulling on lash extensions puts unnecessary stress on both the extensions and the natural lashes.

Many clients don't even realize how often they touch their eyes throughout the day. Remind them to avoid rubbing their eyes and never pick at loose extensions. Picking can cause premature shedding and even damage the natural lash.

Sleep Smart

Sleeping face-down or pressing lashes into a pillow can bend extensions and weaken adhesive bonds over time.

Sleeping on your back when possible or using a silk or satin pillowcase helps reduce friction and keeps lash extensions looking fuller between appointments.

Brush Them Daily

Brushing lash extensions keeps them fluffy, separated, and tangle-free. A quick brush every morning after cleansing helps maintain a clean, polished appearance.

Always brush gently from the middle of the lashes toward the tips using a clean spoolie. Avoid brushing aggressively at the base where the adhesive is located.

Stay Consistent With Refills

Even with perfect aftercare, natural lashes shed as part of their normal growth cycle. Losing a few extensions each day is completely normal.

Scheduling fills every 2-3 wee
